Although slow motion photography has been a specialty for professionals, smartphones have been getting better at giving users a taste of slowing down time.

I recently put the new Samsung S9+ through the paces of capturing fast moving events using the phone’s SUPER SLOW-MO camera setting.

“TOILET: FLUSH” AMONG CES 2018 BIG TRENDS TO SMART STUFF AT HOME

The big trend for 2018?

It’s challenging to pick new trends at the recent 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. After all, with 4,000 vendors showing big and small technology spread out over 2.7 million square feet between several spread-out huge halls, it’s impossible to see it all.

This year though, one repetitive new technology won hands-down. Voice assistant technology from Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Home Assistant were everywhere and in the most interesting appliances.

CES ISN’T JUST ABOUT NEW BUT SMART IMPROVEMENTS ON OLD

CES isn’t just about new products we haven’t see before.  It’s also about technologies that were great when they first came out but are even better after well thought out tweaking. Let’s check some of these out.

  • At mobile chip maker Qualcomm’s press conference this week, it was revealed that the firm’s new Bluetooth system-on-chip slashed power usage by 65%. This could make wireless headphones last nearly three times as long on a single charge, nice!

COMPARING THE $1,350 iPHONE X AND $1,300 SAMSUNG NOTE 8

iPhone X landed on eager Canadian hands on Friday in Canada. The $600 down (64 GB option) on a monthly $95 for two years ( TELUS Alberta) plan begs the question: How does it compare with the 64 GB Samsung Galaxy Note 8, the second most expensive phone costing $550 down on a monthly $95 per month?

Aaaahhh…the beauty of OLED phone screens. They look good from any angle on the Note 8 left, and the iPhone X.

IFA ATTRACTS TECHNOLOGY FROM EVERY GLOBAL CORNER

IFA 2017 attracted more than 253,000 visitors to Berlin, a global trade show for consumer electronics and home appliances. With more than half of all trade visitors coming from abroad, IFA Berlin provided a huge boost for both manufacturers and retailers in the crucial run-up to the holiday period, which runs from Thanksgiving in the United States all the way to Christmas and the New Year. Once again, IFA was operating at full capacity, with 1,805 exhibitors showing their latest products and services on 159,000 square meters of fully booked show floor at Messe Berlin. The mood among exhibitors was highly optimistic, not least given the expected order volume of 4.7 billion euro achieved during the six days of the event.

The Annual 2017 IFA tradeshow in Berlin ends today with a slew of smart and sometimes crazy technology.                                                                                 Much was about the newest wearables, laptops, phones or speakers which are basically incrementally better than older models. But exciting technology is about how to do or experience things, in a new way.

Here are some of my favourites.

BIG AND SMALL HOME APPLIANCES                      The Smart Home appliance category ruled. German high end Miele’s Dialog oven uses a combination of electromagnetic waves (like microwaves) a convection fan and traditional radiant heating elements to cook food, precisely.

SAMSUNG NEW GEAR 360 4K DELIVERS

Its not often I get to push technology limits, but my last 360 virtual reality shoot at West Edmonton Mall proved to be challenging.

When Samsung sent me their newest 4K Gear 360 (2017 edition) action spherical cam, I knew I had to outdo my previous experience with the original Samsung Gear 360  at Whistlers’s #Zipride.
